The Liquid of Life

"But whoever drinks the water I shall give will never thirst; the water I shall give will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” John 4:14

Agua de Mayo or the Water of May is a superstitious belief that the first rain of the month of May can provide healing. Bathing under the raindrops is believed to cure a person's disease and enhance physical appearance such as the toning and glowing of skin. It is a tradition that many Filipinos believe in.

Whether it is truthful or not, I do believe in a fact: water can help alleviate diseases and can make the skin firm and glowing.

Water is the universal solvent that is odorless, tasteless, and colorless, and is therefore the only liquid of life. It is an essential nutrient that is required daily to support the functions of the various internal organs and systems. It is well said that the deprivation of water is a greater risk for death than deprivation of food.

Renato U. Paragas, M.D., the Medical Director of VER1REV Enterprises Corporation, defined the important functions of water represented by the letters comprising the word W-A-T-E-R: W - works to keep body cells toned; A - assists in weight loss; T - transports nutrients and oxygen throughout the body; E - eliminates acidic metabolic wastes and toxins out of the body; and R - regulates body temperature. Hydration makes the various physiologic processes function optimally thus provides better health and well-being.

The deficiency of water in the body is called dehydration. Let me compare the effects of dehydration through the functions on each word. When the cell is dehydrated, it shrinks, being hypertonic, while when it is hydrated, it is in its isotonic nature. This can be compared to the fresh grape fruit and the raisin. Fresh grape is firm, glowing, and palatable, while raisin is dried, shrunk, and has a decent taste. When the skin is hydrated, it looks firm, fresh, and glowing while if it is dehydrated, it looks dry, wrinkled, and aged.

Water assists in weight loss. Water and oil do not mix. These differing properties will lead water to flush out the excess fats ingested through defecation. Thus, shortage of water causes more fats to accumulate in the body. Basically, cholesterol is the body’s water-proofing element. It protects the cells from further dehydrating especially during the state of chronic dehydration.

Water also transports nutrients and oxygen throughout the body through circulation. When nutrients are absorbed in the intestines, they are delivered into the circulation to be distributed throughout the body through diffusion. Blood is not supposed to get out of the blood vessels in massive amounts since that will tantamount to bleeding. Water does the job to provide the essential nutrients to every cell of the body.

Water eliminates metabolic wastes from the body through urination, defecation, and perspiration. The liver also helps detoxify toxins introduced in the body through foods, beverages, various chemicals getting in contact with the skin such as personal health products, household chemicals, pesticides, chemicals in agricultural products, etc. Frequent urination prevents the accumulation of metabolic wastes that are usually highly elevated in persons with chronic kidney disease.

Lastly, water regulates body temperature by balancing the heat and cold index of the body depending on the weather or the defense mechanism against infection. In this season of summer, weathermen frequently warn the public of the danger of elevated heat index that makes people more prone to develop heat-related diseases such as heat cramps, heat exhaustion and the fatal heat stroke. Proper hydration drinking much water, not the caffeinated dehydrating beverages, protects us from these diseases.

Water is one of the six essential nutrients the body needs to remain healthy every day. In fact, together with minerals, it is one of the most neglected and ignored essential nutrient. Therefore, it is important that you hydrate your body adequately. Proper hydration is drinking water following this formula: 50 ml per kilogram body weight per day.
