FACTS ABOUT YOUR #1 SOURCE OF ENERGY

As we breathe the fresh air of June, let us reflect on the past months that led us here.



Have you been well to yourself? Were you eating more of fresh vegetables, fruits, and meat rather than instant and processed foods? Were you drinking water instead of juices, soft drinks, or alcoholic beverages? If it had you second-guessing, then I will educate you once more on how the food choices that we make every day can lead to our longevity or demise.


First of all, let us define nutrition. It is the study of nutrients and how our body is equipped with energy for digestion, absorption, and metabolism, as well as its relationship to diet and disease.


The energy that we get from our diet depends on the food chain. The sun is the source of all the energy here on Earth. On that note, which living organism receives its emitted energy from the sunrays first? Correct! It is the plants, which are our producers. They receive sunlight for photosynthesis that is vital for their metabolism and for us, our respiration, as it releases oxygen as a by-product, and take in carbon dioxide.



The plants that have sufficient energy would be eaten by the primary consumers, such as small preys like insects or large animals like cows or deer. The energy then is lessened because they would use it too for their own metabolism. The large animals would then be eaten by secondary or tertiary consumers, such as bears, snakes, or humans. Again, the same mechanism repeats, where the tertiary consumers use their food as their energy source.


How is this information related to our health advocacy?


Plants have the most energy received from the sun, so if the primary consumers eat them first, for instance this time, the cows, and in turn we eat the cow - because who does not love meat, right? – then our energy is to a minimal. However, if we choose to eat the plants more than the meat, then our energy would be to a maximum. If in every category of the food chain, the energy is lessened, how much more for the processed and instant food that are eaten every day?


There would be less to zero nutrients involved to produce our energy, or ATP to maximize the physiologic and biochemical processes of our body and no nutrients for our cells to be nourished on. Our body would not function properly, and would cry for proper nutrition.


Of course, there are other factors that the plants also use to create a difference. They use the soil to take in nitrogen and minerals, water for hydration, and fertilizer for their quality crop production. Farmers and agriculturists take their agri-soil studies and implement them strictly because they want to see healthy results.



For us, we take in oxygen for breathing, water also for hydration, and food for nutrient intake and energy production. There is no exemption that water can be substituted for beverages, or the food should be focused on fast food, or that we breathe other forms of stable gas. As taking care of plants to produce quality crops are observed, we should treat the same with ourselves too, being strict with our nutritious diet so that we also maximize its benefits and feel the difference in our day-to-day lives.


A much more emphasis on the six essential nutrients should be valued. With carbohydrates, fats, proteins, vitamins and minerals; water is one of the six essential nutrients the body needs to remain healthy every day. It is the cell detoxifier, oxygen and nutrient transporter, temperature regulator, and natural skin toner. Along with water, minerals, is one of the most neglected and ignored essential nutrient.
